(Re)discovering Abel

JH-Viol1-newsHaving played some of Carl Friedrich Abel’s works for solo bass viol in my student days and moved on to other territories, it’s been a revelation to (re)discover many wonderful compositions, beautifully crafted for the instrument, by him. It’s Abel’s sense of timing that fascinates me most, how he builds up the architectural structure of an extended piece that then appears self-evident.
